Within Dia de Los Muertos are celebrations such as Noche de Altares or Night of the Altars where deceased family are celebrated with altars that provide a feast for visiting spirits.
This Dia de Los Muertos painting is representative of an old world tradition that is gaining notoriety in the United States. The multi-day holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to remember friends and family members who have died; and to celebrate their memory in somber, yet festive events. Within Dia de Los Muertos are celebrations such as Noche de Altares or Night of the Altars where deceased family are celebrated with altars that provide a feast for visiting spirits. Favorite items of the honored person or persons are displayed on an altar. These Day of the Dead altars are known as altares de muertos or ofrendas: and they are set during the Day of the Dead celebrations.
In this painting, the two ladies were photographed in the brilliantly decorated outfits. On the left is Cecilia Rios and AD Herndez on the right. In addition, Rosemary created altar on that displays her father, Emigdio, and her mother, Rosie. Also on that altar is a painting of a painting that Emigdio did of Rosie’s father, Benito. The black and white picture is of Rosie’s sisters Carmine and Mary Anne. The altar on the far left has pictures of Rosemary’s husband’s Father, William Tuthill and her husband’s friend Ron Como.
If you look closely, you can see others in the painting including David Bowie and Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson. And Rosemary’s cat named C-Dub! Original size 28x22.
